Award Given:
Dr. Kalyani Gopal: Best Trauma Psychologist in the United States of 2026
Best of Best Review is proud to announce Dr. Kalyani Gopal as the recipient of the Best Trauma Psychologist in the United States of 2026 award.
This recognition celebrates a career spanning more than three decades of clinical excellence, groundbreaking psychological research, human rights leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping survivors of trauma rebuild their lives. Through her work as a psychologist, educator, author, advocate, and founder of SAFE Coalition for Human Rights, Dr. Gopal has created lasting change for vulnerable individuals across the United States and around the world.

A Career Dedicated to Healing
Some professionals study trauma. Others treat trauma. Dr. Kalyani Gopal has spent more than thirty years doing both while simultaneously creating the systems, programs, and environments where healing becomes possible.
As a licensed clinical psychologist, she has worked with children, adolescents, adults, foster families, trafficking survivors, abuse victims, and individuals facing severe mental health challenges. Her work extends beyond the therapy room into communities, schools, courts, law enforcement agencies, shelters, hospitals, and international organizations.
What impressed the Best of Best Review committee most was her ability to connect clinical expertise with real world solutions that create measurable and lasting impact.
She Named the Trauma and Changed the Conversation
Throughout her work with foster children, Dr. Gopal repeatedly witnessed the emotional devastation caused by disrupted attachment relationships. Children moved from home to home often displayed profound emotional wounds that were not fully explained by existing trauma models.
Determined to better understand and address these experiences, she coined the term Displacement Trauma, a concept that describes the complex psychological effects of repeated disruptions in childhood attachment bonds.
Her work helped bring greater attention to the unique emotional struggles faced by foster children and influenced new approaches to treatment and intervention.
In addition, Dr. Gopal has contributed to the evolving understanding of trafficking related trauma and introduced the trauma response known as "Float," expanding the traditional framework of trauma reactions.
These contributions demonstrate the type of innovative thinking that continues to shape the field of psychological trauma treatment.
Building Places Where Healing Happens
During the evaluation process, Best of Best Review considered not only academic and clinical achievements but also real world impact.
Dr. Gopal recognized early in her career that survivors require more than therapy alone. They need safe environments, specialized services, trained professionals, and long term support systems.
Rather than waiting for those systems to appear, she built them.
As President of Mid America Psychological and Counseling Services, PC, she has helped oversee multiple mental health clinics serving communities throughout Indiana and Illinois.
Through SAFE Coalition for Human Rights, she established a therapeutic shelter for women who survived human trafficking and continues expanding services to reach more survivors. She is also developing restorative healing centers in both Indiana and India that will provide comprehensive, evidence based care within safe and supportive environments.
These initiatives reflect a philosophy that healing must be practical, accessible, and sustainable.
A Global Leader in Human Rights and Trauma Recovery
Dr. Gopal's influence extends far beyond the United States.
She has trained judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers, firefighters, foster parents, clinicians, government officials, nonprofit organizations, the FBI, and the United States Secret Service on issues related to trauma, human trafficking, child protection, and mental health.
She developed the first internationally accredited psychologically based human trafficking training program for clinicians, advocates, and law enforcement professionals.
Her work has also included creating victim identification tools for Ukraine and Myanmar, developing clinical training resources in Mongolia, and supporting survivors of war, rape, and exploitation across multiple regions of the world.
Today, she serves as President of the Psychology Coalition at the United Nations, becoming the organization's first Asian American President and subsequently earning reelection for a second term.
The Best of Best Review committee viewed this international leadership as a defining characteristic of her career.
A Voice for Those Who Need One Most
At the center of Dr. Gopal's work is a commitment to human dignity.
Reflecting on her decades of service, she often returns to the experiences of survivors who finally reach a place of safety after years of abuse, exploitation, neglect, or instability.
One of her most powerful observations captures the universal nature of the challenges she confronts every day:
"Human trafficking, like Mental Illness, is an equal opportunity destroyer. It has no party, no religion, no class, no color, no country."
This perspective has guided her work throughout her career and continues to inspire professionals and advocates around the world.
