The James M. Dixon Foundation for Alzheimer's Research and Support, Inc.: Best Nonprofit Organization Supporting Alzheimer’s Caregivers of 2025
The James M. Dixon Foundation for Alzheimer's Research and Support has been honored with the prestigious title of Best Nonprofit Organization Supporting Alzheimer’s Caregivers of 2025. This recognition celebrates the foundation's unwavering commitment to transforming the Alzheimer’s caregiving experience, particularly for families within underserved and underrepresented communities.
A Legacy of Love and Purpose
Founded by Dr. Lori-Renee Dixon James in memory of her father, James M. Dixon, the foundation has built a powerful legacy of service, compassion, and advocacy. Dr. Lori-Renee, a dedicated caregiver herself, established the foundation to ensure that no one has to face Alzheimer’s alone. Driven by the personal experience of caring for her father, the foundation’s programs are deeply rooted in empathy, equity, and real-world impact.
“This Foundation was born out of love, loss, and the determination to make sure no one has to face Alzheimer’s alone,” said Dr. Lori-Renee Dixon James, Founder and President of the Foundation.

Empowering Caregivers Through Compassionate Community-Based Solutions
The foundation's approach is not just about raising awareness but about providing real, tangible support to caregivers. Programs like Daddy’s Closet, which provides essential personal care items to seniors, and The Intentional Caregiver Initiative, offering workshops and retreats, are just a few examples of how the foundation makes a direct and meaningful impact. These initiatives are designed to alleviate the financial, emotional, and physical burdens faced by caregivers, ensuring they are seen, heard, and supported.
“We don’t just support caregivers—we see them. We listen, we advocate, and we build programs that meet them where they are,” Dr. Lori-Renee added.
The foundation also provides vital respite opportunities through initiatives like the Bedtime Stories Podcast and Dental Day, which connects caregivers with local dentists for cleanings and exams while providing caregiving respite. The Youth Caregiver Project, launching in 2025, will support the next generation of caregivers, ensuring that their unique needs are met.
Innovative and Inclusive Leadership
What truly sets The James M. Dixon Foundation apart is its dedication to equity in dementia care. As one of the few Alzheimer’s organizations founded and led by a Black woman caregiver, Dr. Lori-Renee has created a foundation that recognizes the unique challenges faced by families in under-resourced communities, particularly within Black and Brown populations.
The Black ADRD Collective, a national collaborative, seeks to address the disparities in care, access, and outcomes for individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). This initiative helps to amplify resources and support for these communities, fostering a stronger, more inclusive network of care.
Shaping the Future of Alzheimer’s Care
Through its grassroots approach, the foundation is not only helping those living with Alzheimer’s today but also building a future of Alzheimer’s care that prioritizes empathy, inclusion, and accessibility. The foundation is also committed to advancing the next generation of Alzheimer’s researchers and caregivers, offering scholarships to future neurologists and medical professionals, helping to shape a more compassionate healthcare landscape.
Dr. Lori-Renee's leadership has been recognized nationally, as evidenced by her 2024 nomination as a Top Ten Business Woman by the Atlanta Airport Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. Her commitment to creating lasting change in Alzheimer’s care has also led her to deliver keynote addresses at major caregiving and professional organizations.
The Foundation’s Signature Programs Include:
Daddy’s Closet – Providing essential hygiene, personal care, and nutrition items to seniors and those living with Alzheimer’s.
The Intentional Caregiver Initiative – Offering workshops, retreats, and educational tools to empower caregivers.
Dental Day – Ensuring caregivers have access to essential dental care and respite.
